eMoviePoster.comDid you know... that often there are more than one style of one-sheet for a movie, and some can be far more valuable than others?Return to Did You Know Archive Added: 03/09/2015 Did you ever wonder which style of movie poster has, in general, a higher value when there
is
more than one original style poster? Of course it depends on the appreciation among collectors when
these totally different styles have been available (the beauty is in the eye of the beholder). There is never a single reason why one style sells for more than another. One big factor is which one is visually more appealing (and of course that is very subjective). Sometimes one style is far more rare than the other, and that ups the price, because the "more rare" one is much harder to find (but sometimes some styles have been labeled as "rare" by dealers, when they are actually no more rare than the other style(s)). It is also true that pre-Academy Award posters for major films are almost always far rarer than ones with the "Academy Award winner" credit (especially the ones for the movies that won the coveted "Best Picture Oscar", and they often sell for much, much more than the post-Awards style(s)). There are also "advance" posters, which often have the same image as the "regular release" poster, but with "Coming" or "Summer" or a specific date, or something similar added to the bottom of the poster, and those usually sell for little more than the "regular release" poster. There are also teaser" posters which often have a totally different image from the "regular release" poster, usually with next to no text anywhere on the poster (sometimes not even the title). A special subset of alternate style posters are "international" styles. While the studios in the 1920s to the mid-1960s commonly made two different styles of one-sheets for almost every movie, they were both intended for domestic use. Starting in the mid-1960s, U.S. movies were getting more and more widely released all over the world, and the studios would often create a single domestic style one-sheet, and an often completely different "international" style one-sheet, sometimes with a racier image than the domestic style. Some of these "international" style one-sheets are quite rare, and when they have a completely different, superior image, they often sell for FAR more than the regular domestic style. The above just gives a brief overview of what factors contribute to the price differences of the different style one-sheets for a single movie!
