We've heard from a few bidders who left an auction open on their screen for a long time (a couple of hours or even many hours), and they say that the bid amount never changed, so they thought they were the high bidder, but after the auction was over, they discovered that it had indeed changed and they missed their chance to bid again.

Of course, we were sad to hear this (although it is good it is a very rare occurrence), but we thought it best to explain while we wish every "computerized" and "automated" aspects of our auctions worked 100% correctly 100% of the time it is a fact of life that, no matter what, everyone's computer (and nowadays, tablet and phone) is different, and there can be circumstances that lead to a malfunction (either caused by their web browser, their Internet connection, their anti-virus software, or on their device in any other way).

FOR THIS REASON, WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU DON'T "COUNT ON" THE COUNTDOWN TIMER! Instead, if you have left an auction open for more than a little while (and especially if it is at the time near the close of that auction), you should absolutely refresh the auction to be CERTAIN that you are seeing the most recent bid. And if you want to be 100% safe, then you should close the auction and navigate to it again, because even when you "refresh" a tab or window, your cache can still (on rare occasions with certain browser settings) show you outdated information. If you close the tab or window and then go back to the auction, then you have a certainty that you are viewing it "live".
