Did you know... that we believed an Internet rumor that the famous Belgian artist "Wik" was thought to be Jacques Thibesart but actually HE IS NOT?

Added: 08/20/2012

WE GOOFED! This "Did you know..." originally gave incorrect information (based on an Internet rumor), and we have now corrected it, and have our retraction below and then below that the original incorrect article about Wik art on Belgian posters.
We have a rule to never trust information from random people on the Internet (no matter how credible they may seem), but we really thought the below information about Wik art made sense based on what we read, so we ran it several weeks ago in one one of our "Did you know..."s as shown below!

But we should NEVER have broken that rule, because it has since been determined that "Nik" and "Wik" are definitely different! The original website we got the information from ran a retraction (HERE).

REMEMBER! Take everything you read on the Internet with a large grain of salt! We've certainly learned that lesson.

Here is the original INCORRECT article we ran:

For many, many years, we have been seeing Belgian posters with the artist signature of "Wik", but we've never been able to find out more information... until this week!

A couple of our sharp-eyed employees (Dan and Matt) located some references to the full artist's name, and guess what? It's got nothing to do with Wik! It turns out the signature is actually "Nik" and it belongs to Jacques Thibesart who also did pulp magazine covers in the 1950s.

Here are the references they found that credit Jacques Thibesart:

and
http://oncle-archibald.blogspot.com/2011/01/andre-guerber-editeur-3.html

We have updated our database and all future Nik posters will be properly credited to Jacques Thibesart. Incidentally, here is a sampling of his movie posters (each is clickable to view in our Auction History, or you can view them all here):
