Did You Know... that the Post Office and other shippers are MUCH rougher on package handling than ever before?

If you have been buying from us for any length of time, you surely know that we "go the extra mile" to "gorilla proof" our packaging, because of how very rough the Post Office and other shippers can be on the tubes and packages they handle. And in 2010 we hired master cartoonist Erik Andresen to create the below comic strip illustrating this, in a humorous way!

And for 27 years, this "extra" level of packaging REALLY paid off, because not only did our customers often rave about our packaging, but more importantly we almost NEVER had any insurance claims for damage, pretty unheard of for a mail order business (we averaged one or two a year, which is staggering to contemplate).

But in the past year, we have had around a dozen damaged tubes and packages (see above for an example). Sometimes, the packing is still so good that the posters survived fine (as in the above case), but in other cases, the tube or box has been completely crushed or flattened, and there is much loss (and we always fully insure the packages, so it is not the financial loss that bothers me, because that is recovered, but it is just SO sad when items survive 25 to 100 years in nice condition, and then are damaged because of poor handling).

What has caused this increase in damage? We actually now pack BETTER than ever (because we have seen the need), so it is not that. I am certain it is because the shipping companies have added so much automation, where machines more packages, and some time packages get "caught" under wheels or on conveyor belts, and this is borne out by seeing some of damage, which ONLY could have occurred after being "run over", like where one of our super strong tubes is flattened like a pancake.

So because of this, we have been significantly upping how strong we make our packages, using boxes more often than mailers, and in the case of VERY expensive items (over $3,000), double boxing or double tubing the orders! This may seem excessive, because so many not so well packed orders from other sellers arrive just fine, but see how you feel when YOU get a damaged order!

And we have NEVER had a double boxed or double tubed order get damaged enough to where the items inside were damaged. But please, if you have an opinion on this, take the time to email me your thoughts, and I guarantee you I will personally read and reply to every email I receive!
