eMoviePoster.comDid you know... that 30 years ago collectors waited all year for a chance to buy great posters?Return to Did You Know Archive Added: 07/09/2018 It is true. In the 1970s and 1980s, THE event of the year for movie poster collectors was "Cinevent", held each year in Columbus, Ohio (and founded in 1968 by the late Steve Haynes). There were a number of other movie memorabilia shows at that time, but Cinevent drew the most movie poster collectors (and the most big "name" ones), thanks in part to its somewhat central location. Many collectors and dealers could only attend ONE show a year, and many chose Cinevent, and quite a few collectors would save up their money so that they could take advantage of the many great items that dealers would bring to this show. In 1990, Bruce Hershenson organized the first ever all-movie poster auction at a major auction house, and for the next few years, this annual December event became a second event many collectors would wait the entire year for, for there was over a million dollars of great movie posters in each auction! But over the next few years, more and more shows and auctions were added, and before too long there was one every month or more, so collectors no longer "saved up" as they once had. And of course the biggest change came at the end of the 1990s, when the internet took off, and eBay (led by the presence of Bruce Hershenson, who moved his entire operation online in 1999) became the worldwide leading source of movie posters for sale and at auction, and suddenly anyone could buy vast amounts of movie posters on a DAILY basis! And of course, over the past few years eBay has virtually imploded (and Bruce Hershenson moved to his own site in 2008), but between eMoviePoster.com's 140,000 auctions a year (and those of many, many others), there is still a MASSIVE amount of movie paper available for sale, every day, 365 days a year! It is hard for a modern day collector to realize just how different the hobby is today from how it was in the 1970s and 1980s, and the biggest single difference is the huge change in how many posters are constantly offered for sale!
