Did You Know... why you see style C and style D posters from classic 1930s and 1940s movies where there are no style A or B posters?

We received this question recently:

"Can I just ask a question which you can surely answer with your vast knowledge of posters. I am a big fan of Random Harvest & Mrs Miniver films (from the 1940's). I believe there are rare U.S. 1 Sheets for the Style C & Style D in existence from each film.

My question is, would there not also be Style A & Style B versions of the US One Sheets for these films as well? Or does it mean that Style A & Style B versions  were not printed every time?

I suppose I am saying if you have ever seen the Style A & Style B versions of one-sheets for either of these films?"

I replied as follows:

"You are making a VERY common (and natural) mistake! The answer is that MGM was the only major studio to NOT use the standard "style A" and "style B" naming system for one-sheets, and this has confused many thousands of collectors!

What did they do instead? They almost always created two three-sheets and two one-sheets for each of their movies, and they called the two three-sheets they printed "style A" and "style B" and they did not want to do the same for the two one-sheets, so those were called "style C" and "style D".

Once you understand this, all becomes obvious!" There are NO Style A & Style B versions of one-sheets for either of these films."
