Did You Know... what is the most rare (and most valuable) Star Wars related poster there is?
Return to Did You Know ArchiveAdded: 11/09/2015
One of our members saw our announcement about our special "Star Wars" section of our December Major Auction, and they
asked us "What is the most rare (and most valuable) Star Wars related poster there is?"
Of course, with movie posters, there were normally thousands created, so the rarity question is usually "What is the poster where the fewest examples
survive?" But in the case of ONE incredibly special Star Wars related poster, that is not the case!
What is it? In 1985, master promoter George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, dreamed up a special promotion where nine theaters only showed all three
movies on one day only! Lucas had exactly TWO one-sheets made for each for the nine theaters, so only eighteen posters were created, and each
was printed with the specific theater names, and there were slight differences between the nine posters in regards to border size and measurements (we
have only seen three of the nine, so we can't say for certain exactly what they all look like, because they are THAT rare!).
While there may be a few other Star Wars posters where only a tiny number are believed to exist, there is always the possibility that other examples
could be discovered at any time in the future, but in the case of the original posters from this one-day 1985 trilogy re-release, only 18 were made,
and there is no chance that any more of them could ever surface (and less than half of the original 18 are believed to still be in collectors' hands).
If a poster were to be called "the Holy Grail" of Star Wars posters, it would have to be this one. Note that there is a "bootleg" of this poster, but
it has many significant differences, and no one who saw an image of any of the "real" posters could possibly be fooled by it.
We have auctioned two of the 18 known examples of this poster in the past, and the one in better condition auctioned for $20,500, and one in lesser
condition auctioned for $12,703. Now, in our special "Star Wars" section of our December Major Auction, we have a third example, and this one is
extra-special, because eight of the theaters were in the U.S. and ONE was in Canada, and this poster is one of the two created for that
Canadian theater! See an image of it in our "preview" of our special "Star Wars" section.
There ARE other very rare and desirable Star Wars posters, of course! We have auctioned most of them, and you
can view a gallery of all 10,000+ Star Wars items we have auctioned (arranged from highest priced to lowest priced) at this link:

And here are images that link directly to the highest priced example of five of the very best Star Wars posters we have auctioned in the past:
Finally, note that there are two other VERY special Star Wars posters which are not shown above, because we have
not auctioned them yet, but they WILL be in our special "Star Wars" section of our December Major Auction!
One is the Star Wars "Concert" poster (see it in our "preview" of our special "Star Wars" section). The other is one of
TWO examples currently known of an Unfolded International One-Sheet from
The Empire Strikes Back. When
we first auctioned the other known example of this poster in 2009, there was speculation that it might be a "bootleg" (unauthorized) poster, and it
still auctioned for $1,827. Now, new information has to come to light that says it is almost surely NOT a bootleg, and we are auctioning the
other known example (full details about this will be on the auction for this poster)!
And now YOU know what is the most rare Star Wars related poster, and why!
