Many collectors tell me "I will NEVER sell my collection", to which I always reply as follows:
"That may be true that you are currently never planning to sell your collection, but unforeseen circumstances can arise (lose your job, a change in your health, etc) and say I advise all collectors to "never say never"! Besides, collecting is a passion (if you were solely an "investor" and had no love of the posters you likely would pick something else to invest in (although I can say that many times collectible movie posters HAVE proven to be wonderful investments, but usually when the person bought out of love, and that great rise in value was secondary to them!). And sometimes a passion that burns really brightly for many years can over time, or suddenly "burn out" and then all the collector wants to do is to divest themselves of the collection that no longer has much meaning to them.

And of course, none of us takes their collection with us when we pass away, so all "never selling your collection" accomplishes is that it often creates a major headache for your loved ones and heirs, because they often know little about your collection, and sometimes don't have the first clue of how to best sell it after you are gone. So everyone should at least somewhat have a general plan for what happens to their collection after they are gone, and either tell the person who will be in charge of their estate, or better yet, write it down, so it is very clear what your wishes are, and you will be giving your heirs much needed help at a difficult time.

But what about if YOU decide you want to sell your entire collection next week, or next month, or next year? There have always been three main ways to sell one's collection:
1) You can sell it yourself. You can create eBay auctions, go to collectible shows, send out lists, etc. There are two GIANT drawbacks to this plan. One is that you will be essentially giving yourself a second job, and you may find it takes lots and lots of time. The second is that you will surely sell some percentage of your collection, maybe 5% to 10%, but then what do you do with the rest?
2) You can sell it to a dealer, all at once, and for cash. There is one GIANT drawback to this plan. No dealer is going to offer you anywhere close to the retail value of your collection, and depending on the size of it, and how valuable the items average, you will probably be lucky if they offer you one third of the retail, and if you have a lot of lower value items, they may offer you just 10% of retail!
     But you have to look at the dealers side of this. It may take them a year or two just to get their investment back (again, depending on the size of it, and how valuable the items average) and for that kind of long term investment, they are going to want a really healthy return on their investment, which is good for them, but bad for you. Still, there are some collectors who just want cash, and they want it now, and those DO sell their collection to a dealer, and they accept the huge discounted offer.
3) You can consign some or all of your collection to an auction. There USED TO BE one GIANT drawback to this plan. This is that there are lots and lots of "horror stories" about just about every major auction. Some claim to never receive some or all of your consignments. Some damage them after they receive them. Some have all kinds of hidden added charges in the "fine print" in their contracts where you end up receiving very little of the final selling prices of your items. Most have had multiple lawsuits filed against them from disgruntled consignors. These are all certainly major drawbacks!
