eMoviePoster.comCool Item Of the Week: 1920s Our Gang studio campaign bookReturn to Cool Item of the Month Archive Added: 10/17/2011 As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES! This week, I have the ultra-rare studio campaign book for a 1920s promotion for the Hal Roach "Our Gang" comedies, the long-running series of kids movies, started in 1922 by Hal Roach, and continuing for the next 20 years, with an ever changing cast (as the kids grew too old!). Among the best remembered cast members were George 'Spanky' McFarland, Carl 'Alfalfa' Switzer, Scotty Beckett (who later played the young Al Jolson in "The Jolson Story"), Billie 'Buckwheat' Thomas (one of the first black African-American actors to achieve success in mainstream sound movies), Stymie Beard, Darla Hood, Sunshine Sammy Morrison (one of the first black African-American actors to achieve success in mainstream sound movies), Jackie Cooper, and many others! Here is an image of the front cover, one interior page spread, and the back
cover (see larger
images by clicking on these thumbnails). Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 25,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!).
