Cool Item Of the Week: She Played and Paid pressbook

Return to Cool Item of the Month Archive
Added: 12/07/2015

As many of you know, I, Bruce Hershenson, owner of eMoviePoster.com, have collected pressbooks (and related movie paper like studio yearbooks) for over 30 years, and I have the world's foremost collection of such material. I thought I would share one item with you each week, the type of items you almost surely have never seen before, and which might not come up for sale for DECADES!

So below is the pressbook from She Played and Paid, the 1920 Henry Bernstein silent France romantic love triangle gambling melodrama ("Fannie Ward in Henry Bernstein's Dramatic Sensation"; "Adapted from the Great Story 'La Rafale'"; "Story byt he celebrated French Novelist, Henri Bernstein"; a wild story of a Baroness in France who has a true love on the side, and the lover tries to win lots of money gambling so the Baroness will leave her husband, but he loses everything instead and decides to commit suicide, and the Baroness gives herself to yet another man to get the money to save her lover, but just when she gets back to her husband, he has already committed suicide!) starring Fannie Ward ("The Brilliant International Star"), M.M. Joffre, Jean Deaux, M. Croue, and Janvier. Note that star Fannie Ward had been a Broadway star starting in 1890 when she was 19, and she became a major star of the 1890s and early 1900s, and because she had a very youthful appearance, she could play parts far younger than she actually was, and she was called "The Youth Girl". She made 26 movies by 1920, at which point, being 49, she wisely retired!

Here is an image of the pressbook's covers and an interior page:

Each week I will showcase a different pressbook (or related item) from my collection (so in just 20,000 weeks or so, I will have shared the entire collection with you!). And remember to check out our previous Cool Items of the Week in our Cool Item of the Week archive (which is fully searchable!).
