An Undated (probably 1950s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 27 1/2" x 39 1/2") (Learn More) Great Guns, the 1941 Monty Banks military screwball comedy ("They're the target in target practice! They're the revel in reveille!..... and they're the pain in the Sergeant's neck!") starring Stan Laurel, Oliver Hardy (Laurel and Hardy), Sheila Ryan, Dick Nelson, Edmund MacDonald, Paul Harvey, Russell Hicks, Charles Arnt, and Alan Ladd (in an uncredited role). Note that this movie was released in October 1941, when the U.S. was on the verge of entering World War II (and since it was expected by many, it made sense for studios to make war movies at this time). Important Added Info: Note that this is a "stock" poster created by a distributor for use by theaters showing re-releases of their 1930s and 1940s Laurel & Hardy movies in the 1950s. Theaters would order this poster, which had a large blank rectangle at bottom. Sometimes the studio would overprint the stock poster with the title of a specific movie, and sometimes they sent a series of large paper snipes with the titles of specific entries of the series, so the theater could paste in each snipe as needed, thus getting many posters for the price of one. Sometimes stock posters are found with blank snipe areas. In this case, the poster was overprinted with the title "Great Guns", a 1941 Laurel & Hardy movie. Condition: good. This poster has been linenbacked, but it was not very well done, likely both because the restorer did not do a good job at all, and because the years since it has been linenbacked have not been kind to the poster. Overall, the poster was in fair to good condition prior to linenbacking. Generally, it had a foreign stamp at top right and ink transfer of the same stamp at bottom right. It had smudges and stains scattered through the poster, some of which looks to be ink transfer. The poster was not well backed at all, because you can still see some or all of the defects generally described above (in some cases, as should be immediately evident in our image, the linenbacker did no restoration to some of the defects), and if there was restoration of the above defects, it was not done very well. Certainly, a talented restorer could perform additional restoration (either with or without re-backing the poster), but it might be fairly expensive to have this done, so bear that in mind before you place a bid.
