An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Title Lobby Card (LC TC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Canary Murder Case, the 1929 Malcolm St. Clair & Frank Tuttle detective mystery crime thriller ("From the novel by S.S. Van Dine"; Louise Brooks plays the "canary" who is the showgirl who gets murdered early in the movie; the movie was shot as a silent and then had to be re-shot as a sound movie, and Brooks was in Europe and refused to return to provide the voice for her part, which was a major part of why she was pretty much blacklisted in Hollywood after that) starring William Powell (as Philo Vance), James Hall, Louise Brooks, Jean Arthur, Charles Lane, and Gustav von Seyffertitz. Note that William Powell first played Philo Vance in 1929's "The Canary Murder Case" and after the character proved very popular, he followed it the next year with "The Greene Murder Case", after which Basil Rathbone took over the role that same year in "The Bishop Murder Case". After Powell played Vance again in "The Benson Murder Case" (which was also made in a Spanish language version with an entirely different case), he then played him one more time in "The Kennel Murder Case" in 1933, but the character also appeared in ten more movies between 1934 and 1947, with other actors in the lead roles.

Important Added Info: Note that lobby cards from this movie are incredibly rare. We have only previously auctioned single scene card (which did not show Louise Brooks) until we received this wonderful title card!

Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

What IS gelbacking? Learn More

Condition: very good. The card's bottom blank border was trimmed off below the small text at left and right. It had tiny paper loss in the middle of the left blank border and some faint smudges around the edges, with tiny stains in the top and bottom of the first "R" of "MURDER". Overall, the card was in good to very good condition prior to restoration. A talented restorer gel backed the card and performed excellent restoration to the above defects. You can see slight signs of the restoration, but the card displays really well!
