An Original Vintage Linenbacked Travel Poster (measures 29 1/2" x 43 1/4") (Learn More) Pittsburgh in the Beginning, the 1930s Pennsylvania Railroad poster (one of a series of posters, each on an individual state served by the Pennsylvania Railroad, commissioned by the Pennsylvania Railroad from famed artist N.C. Wyeth) encouraging travel to the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania ("FORT PRINCE GEORGE established February 17, 1754"). This poster features great art of English settlers interacting with Native American tribesmen. If anyone knows more about this poster, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Artist: N.C. Wyeth Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: fair. The poster was never folded. It had a 6 inch area at the bottom that was trimmed off (it read "Modern Pittsburgh is served by the Pennsylvania Railroad"). It had a 12" vertical tear in the right of the top border, extending down through the "E" of "BEGINNING", into the sky background below. Someone put some tape on the back of that at one time and it somewhat bled through to the front in the sky background area and above it. There were many creases, tears, stains, and areas of paper loss around the edges of the poster, but few that extended into the artwork area. Overall, the poster was in fair condition prior to linenbacking. Decades ago, some restorer mounted it onto rice paper and then onto a very thin linen, and then performed a lot of border restoration (basically painting over almost all of them, to "even them out"), but they did no restoration within the image area, and they did not attempt to re-create the missing bottom text, but instead added a 3 inch blank area to the bottom, to give it a bottom border. The poster is still firmly glued to the rice paper, but the rice paper is starting to separate a lot from the thin linen. If I owned this poster, I would surely have it removed from the thin linen and re-backed, but this might be very expensive, especially if one wanted to re-create the missing bottom text. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have further restoration performed. Learn More about condition grades
