Date Sold 12/20/2022Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14" x 18 1/2" [36 x 47 cm]) (Learn More) The Chinese Cat, the 1944 Phil Rosen Asian detective mystery crime thriller ("Suggested by Earl Derr Biggers' Character") starring Sidney Toler ("as Charlie Chan"), Mantan Moreland, Joan Woodbury, Benson Fong (as Tommy Chan, #3 Son), Ian Keith, Betty Blythe, Anthony Warde, and I. Stanford Jolley. Note that the very first Charlie Chan movie was "House Without a Key" in 1925, with George Kuwa as Chan. In 1927, "The Chinese Parrot" (directed by Paul Leni) starred Sojin Kamiyama as Chan. In 1929 came the third movie, "Behind That Curtain", starring E.L. Park as Charlie Chan. 1931 brought "Charlie Chan Carries On", starring Warner Oland in the first of many movies with him as the Asian detective, and he was later replaced by Sidney Toler and then Roland Winters (there would ultimately be 47 Charlie Chan movies!). Of course, Charlie Chan is one of the most memorable literary creations ever, from author Earl Derr Biggers, but because politically correct-minded people have viewed the character as outdated, the movies are rarely shown, which is a shame! Finally, note that, for unknown reasons, first release movie paper from this one 1940s Charlie Chan movie is incredibly rare, maybe even more rare than any of the 1930s titles! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this Belgian poster, and that was 5 years ago! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 18 1/2" [36 x 47 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster originally had a blank top that was neatly trimmed off (this is commonly done with Belgian posters, similar to how the blank top is trimmed off of U.S. window cards). The poster also had minor wear on the folds. It had some pinholes, small tears, and stains in the blank borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above. Learn More about condition grades
