Date Sold 5/3/2020Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Paperbacked Style A Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) Stranger on the Third Floor, the 1940 Boris Ingster murder mystery crime film noir (about a newspaper reporter who is the sole witness to a murder, and his testimony convicts a man of that crime, but he becomes doubtful as to whether he is 100% sure that he identified the right man!) starring Peter Lorre, John McGuire, Margaret Tallichet, Charles Waldron, Elisha Cook Jr., and Charles Halton. Note that the man falsely convicted of murder is played by Elisha Cook Jr., and that Peter Lorre, who is the real murderer, does not give his first line of dialog until 10 minutes before the end of the movie, and yet he received top billing! Also note that this was clearly one of the first film noir movies, and yet it is rarely mentioned, even though it is an excellent movie, and of great historical significance! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned one example of this half-sheet, and that was 7 years ago, when it sold for $825. The buyer of that poster has now reconsigned it to us, so this is still the only example of this poster we have ever auctioned! Note that this poster has been paperbacked. What is paperbacking? This means the poster was backed onto a paper backing (acid-free), that is similar in feel to that of the original poster (except somewhat heavier). It is a similar process to linenbacking, except that most collectors use linenbacking for one-sheets and paperbacking for half-sheets, inserts, window cards, and lobby cards. Note that because this poster was paperbacked onto a thicker paper backing, it CAN'T be sent rolled (someone could conceivably roll it or try to do so, but we know it would definitely lessen its condition, so we will only send it in a very large flat package, unless the buyer insists, and then they would be responsible for any damage). What IS paperbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. Prior to paperbacking, the poster was never folded. It had a 12" horizontal tear starting in the upper left border and running across Cook's mouth and into the background beneath the words "ON THE". There was an 8" tear in the right border running below Lorre's eye and across the bridge of his nose, and above his other eye, and ending at the top of the woman's hair. There were many creases and scuffs scattered in the rest of the image. There were some tears and tiny paper loss around the edges of the poster. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to paperbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects (see our image). Learn More about condition grades
