An Original Vintage Theatrical Oversized Movie Still (measures 11 3/4" x 15 3/4" [30 x 40 cm]) (Learn More) Der Blaue Engel (simultaneously released in the U.S. as "The Blue Angel", there were English language and German language versions), the classic 1930 Josef von Sternberg German tragic romantic musical melodrama (about a well respected college professor who falls for a night club singer, and she is thrilled to have such an illustrious suitor, but he throws his career away to marry her, with disastrous consequences; from the novel by Heinrich Mann) starring Emil Jannings (as Professor Immanuel Rath), Marlene Dietrich (as Lola Lola), Kurt Gerron, Rosa Valetti, Hans Albers, and Reinhold Bernt. Note that we do not know if there are any differences in the cast between the German language and the English language version (we know that most of the actors were German, but that they performed the English language version themselves in heavily accented English). If anyone knows of any differences between the two versions of this movie, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this color still, which measures 11 3/4" x 15 3/4" [30 x 40 cm], is a gigantic mystery! First of all, it is on a heavy board, and it appears that it was created that way. The back of the board is quite "toned" and darkened, and that makes us feel certain that the still is from the 1950s or earlier. The front of the still is on a glossy paper and there is a pinhole in each corner. But there is no writing anywhere on the front or back, so we have no idea what country it is from. We feel certain that it is not German, because German lobby cards or stills from this time period would have studio information or the film title. It could possibly be French, because some French stills measure this size. But we really can't say for certain where it was created or how it was used, except that we do feel it is surely from the 1950s or earlier. Please do not bid on this still unless you can accept the many uncertainties about its origin and how it was used.
UPDATED 06/08/2017: Note that our consignor tells us that he believes this to be a rare European still from the 1930s, and not possibly as late as the 1950s as we mention in the Important Added Info section. Condition: good. There are many fine scuff marks scattered throughout the still, including in the stars' faces. There is a pinhole in each corner. However, from any reasonable viewing distance it displays well. But please do not bid on this unless you have looked closely at our super-sized image and can accept its condition (and also the uncertainties about its origin described above).
