Note that this poster features Ernst Penzoldt art of a snake with an apple in it's mouth, coiled around a clown. Ernst Penzoldt was a German author, sculptor, caricaturist and painter. From 1949 he was the general secretary of the West German section of the PEN club. In 1924 he founded (together with other eminent writers) the literature society The Argonauts. The Argonauts in Greek mythology were a band of heroes who, in the years before the Trojan War, accompanied Jason to Colchis in his quest to find the Golden Fleece. The Argonauts also was a German monthly literature magazine between 1914 and 1921, which featured a Goethe poem on its frontispiece about this classical myth. The revenue from these large and popular carnival events helped to finance the influential literary society.
