An Original Vintage Unfolded French [War] Poster (measures 31" x 46 3/4" [79 x 119 cm]) (Learn More) La Marseillaise, the 1918 French World War I (WWI) war poster (with taglines that translate to "'La Marseillaise' created in Strasbourg by Rouget de L'isle in 1792 and returned there triumphantly in 1918 at the head of the Allied Armies"; "Let's go then, children of the Fatherland, let's finish liberating the people -G. Clemenceau") featuring Jacques Carlu artwork of a singing Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle with soldiers in the background. Note that Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (Claude-Joseph Rouget de l'Isle) was a French army officer who wrote La Marseillaise in 1792 to inspire French troops fighting against Prussia and Austria. Supporters of the French Revolution adopted the song, most famously a volunteer army from Marseilles who sang it while marching on Paris, giving the song its name. The song was declared the official national anthem for France in 1879. Artist: Jacques Carlu Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning! Condition: good. The poster was placed on to a very thin linen backing shortly after being printed. The purpose was to reinforce the poster, and no restoration was performed. It has deterioration and paper loss around the edges of the poster and the linen, and there are stains scattered in various areas. It has pinholes and tears around the edges and some scuff marks scattered in various areas. The poster can be professionally removed from the original linen and placed on to a proper linen backing and restored, but bear in mind the cost of restoration and its condition before bidding.
