La Marseillaise, the 1918 French World War I (WWI) war poster (with taglines that translate to "'La Marseillaise' created in Strasbourg by Rouget de L'isle in 1792 and returned there triumphantly in 1918 at the head of the Allied Armies"; "Let's go then, children of the Fatherland, let's finish liberating the people -G. Clemenceau") featuring Jacques Carlu artwork of a singing Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle with soldiers in the background. Note that Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle (Claude-Joseph Rouget de l'Isle) was a French army officer who wrote La Marseillaise in 1792 to inspire French troops fighting against Prussia and Austria. Supporters of the French Revolution adopted the song, most famously a volunteer army from Marseilles who sang it while marching on Paris, giving the song its name. The song was declared the official national anthem for France in 1879.
Artist: Jacques Carlu
Important Added Info: Note that this is an extremely rare poster. We have never auctioned one in all our years of auctioning!
