An Original Vintage Theatrical Chapter #3 (The Gas Chamber) Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) S.O.S. Coast Guard, the 1937 Alan James & William Witney mad scientist science fiction (sci-fi) adventure serial ("Uncle Sam's first line of defense battling the marauders of the deep!"; "A Republic Serial in 12 Lightning Episodes"; "Original story by Morgan Cox, Ronald Davidson"; a wacky story of Coast Guard men who hear of a mad scientist who has discovered a mineral that gives off radioactive gas and destroys everything it touches, except for glass, and they are told he is dead, but they discover he is alive, and by the last chapter of the serial, they have him trapped, and he and his giant servant are drowned) starring Ralph Byrd, Bela Lugosi (as Boroff, the mad scientist), Maxine Doyle, Richard Alexander (as Thorg, the giant servant), Lee Ford, and Roy Barcroft. Note that this was a 12 chapter serial, and it was not released in a feature version in 1937, but five years later, Republic Pictures did release an edited feature version, with the same title, and since America was now in World War II, a prologue was added congratulating America's Coast Guard! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this card has been "gel backed". What does that mean? It means that a talented restorer backed the card onto a gel material, and they then performed restoration to the above defects, and then removed the gel backing, and afterward the card still looks and feels like an original card (and it is!), with no backing at all. Many collectors prefer this method of restoration to paperbacking or linenbacking, because with those methods the card no longer looks like it was not backed. Gel backing can't be used with cards that have major paper loss or other major defects, but for the cards it can be used on, it is really an excellent method of restoration! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has. What IS gelbacking? Learn More Condition: good to very good. The card had pinholes, stains, and small tears around the edges, with paper loss in the left of the top border that extended into the sailor's cap. It was folded down the middle and it had some stains scattered in the image. Overall, the card was in good condition prior to restoration. Given the card's defects described above, the restorer did a pretty good job, but you can see signs of the defects and the restoration. Learn More about condition grades
