An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Australian Daybill Movie Poster (db; measures 14 1/2" x 36" [37 x 91 cm]) (Learn More)

Aloma of the South Seas, the 1926 Maurice Tourneur silent tropical island romantic love triangle melodrama ("From the play by John B. Hymer and LeRoy Clemens"; about an American who falls in love with a beautiful native dancer on a tropical island, but she has a native boyfriend, but everything works out in the end when the American finds a white woman and the native couple is reunited) starring Gilda Gray (in the title role as Aloma), Percy Marmont, Warner Baxter, Julanne Johnston, and William Powell (right before he appeared in Beau Geste). Note that this movie was loosely remade in 1941 under the same title with Dorothy Lamour in the title role. Also, note that this is a "lost" film which means that no surviving copies are thought to exist.

Artist: Richardson Studio
Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this Australian daybill!

Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 62 linenbacked Australian daybills that all have great art from Richardson Studio (or John Richardson, before he became "Richardson Studio"!), which many collectors feel have the best art and design of any Australian daybills, and are highly sought after by collectors. These were accumulated by a very dedicated collector over many years, and they are now being all offered at once (in 62 separate auctions), so this is a wonderful opportunity to obtain one or many of these daybills, many of which rarely are offered for sale or at auction.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had a blank top area (typical of long daybills), where they would write play dates, and that was neatly trimmed off, causing the poster to measure 14 1/2" x 36". It also had minor wear on the folds. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. After the poster was backed, it acquired some tiny brown dot stains near the bottom of the image, and a few in the top blank border.
