Date Sold 6/12/2014Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Undated (probably 1930s) Re-release Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More) Hell's Angels, the classic 1930 Howard Hughes World War I (WWI) England Royal Flying Corps military airplane aviation pilot romantic love triangle melodrama ("Howard Hughes' Thrilling Air Spectacle"; "Howard Hughes' Amazing Air Spectacle"; "The First Multi-Million Dollar Talking Picture"; "Howard Hughes' thrilling multi-million dollar - air spectacle"; produced by Howard Hughes; about two brothers at Oxford who join the RAF when World War I starts, and they both fall for the same beautiful girl, but when they go off on a bombing mission, they return to find her with yet a third man) starring Jean Harlow, Ben Lyon, James Hall, John Darrow, Lucien Prival, and Douglas Gilmore. Note that filming on this movie originally started in 1927, and it was being filmed as a silent, and Greta Nissen had the lead female role. But the movie took a very long time to make, and by that point, sound had taken over Hollywood, and producer/director Howard Hughes made the unusual decision to entirely re-shoot the movie with sound. And since Greta Nissen had a strong Norwegian accent (which made no difference in silent movies, but obviously was terrible for sound), and since Jean Harlow had come along, Hughes replaced Nissen with Harlow, which was the greatest break of Harlow's career, but heartbreaking for Nissen, who continued in movies without a big break until 1937, when she retired! Important Added Info: Note that we have had always thought that the way to tell the 1930 lobby cards from the 1937 re-release lobby cards on this movie was the airplane in the bottom right. On the originals, it is straight up and down and on the re-releases, it is at a slant. But there is also a third type of card, which DOES have the plane at the slant, but which does not have any of the small writing on the bottom found on the 1937 re-release cards (they have the re-release date in the lower right and studio text in the lower left). This third type of card, which is offered here, is blank in the bottom border, and it was not altered! We suppose it is probably from a different re-release than the 1937 one, but we can't say for sure. Please do not bid on this card unless you can accept this uncertainty. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: fair to good. The card had pinholes, tears, and stains around the edges, with some stains and smudges scattered in the image. There was a 4" uneven tear in the lower left of the image. Some long ago restorer performed restoration to the back of the borders, putting much tape on the back of the left and right borders, and some on the back of the top border, and also on the back of the tear in the lower left. They then performed paint restoration to the front of the card. Probably decades ago, it matched really well, but it has aged differently from the rest of the card so it stands out. Please do not bid on this poster unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have further restoration performed. Learn More about condition grades
