An Original 1938 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French Two-Panel "Double Grande" Movie Poster (2p; measures 63" x 92" [160 x 234 cm]; printed in 2 pieces) (Learn More) Personal Property (released in other English-speaking countries as "The Man in Possession"), the 1937 W.S. Van Dyke ("The Hit-Director of 'After the Thin Man' 'San Francisco' and others") romantic comedy ("At last they're together - and how!"; "Just because he's her handsome butler can she call him her 'Personal Property'"; "They're sweethearts now! And what thrills!"; about a broke American widow living in London, and a son of a formerly wealthy family is assigned to watch over her so that she can keep her house, and his brother meets her and begins romancing her, and each thinks the other is rich and the solution to their problems, but of course, she eventually falls for the handsome man who knows she is broke!) starring Jean Harlow, Robert Taylor ("in a happy huddle for the first time!"), Reginald Owen, Una O'Connor, Henrietta Crosman, E.E. Clive, Lionel Braham, and Marla Shelton. Note that this was a re-make of the 1931 film The Man in Possession, with Robert Montgomery and Charlotte Greenwood. Artist: Roger Soubie Important Added Info: Note that this French two-panel, which measures 63" x 92" [160 x 234 cm], is a very rare pre-World War II French poster (very few French posters from before the war survive, likely because of the paper shortages during the war, when they would print posters on the back of old posters!). Not only does it have great Roger Soubie artwork, but it also was titled to "Valet of Hearts" in French, and Soubie added a great jack of hearts playing card, but putting a "V" for "valet" in the top corners! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was almost certainly discovered unused. It had staining in the middle left of the left panel (in the blue background, but extending into the image and letters in that area. There was similar staining in the right of the left panel, in Harlow's hair and shoulder, and in the "t" of "Valet". Looking at the front of the poster, you might think that the staining occurred after the poster was backed, but there is no trace of it on the linen behind it, so I feel it surely occurred before it was backed. Other than the staining, the poster was in pretty nice condition prior to linenbacking. Whoever had the poster backed simply had it backed exactly as is, and did not address the staining in any way, and there area also tiny areas in the part where the two panels join where there are tiny tears, because the two panels were not glued done perfectly. Otherwise, the poster was nicely backed. If I owned this great poster, I would surely have a talented restorer touch up those stained areas (which I believe they could do without re-backing the poster), and after that restoration, the poster will look incredible!
