Wellman Depression era juvenile crime melodrama (about a giant problem of The Great Depression, where teen children of poor people would leave home to try to make it on their own, and they would end up roaming the countryside in gangs, often forced to steal to stay alive, and of course, also having to fend off predators of all sorts) starring Frankie Darro, Dorothy Coonan Wellman (billed as "Dorothy Coonan"), Rochelle Hudson, Edwin Phillips, Ann Hovey, Arthur Hohl, Sterling Holloway, Ward Bond, Alan Hale Jr. (uncredited in his first film), and Guy Kibbee. Note that this is a really wonderful pre-Code movie which showed the harsh realities of the effects of The Great Depression on children, made at the height of the Depression. Director Wellman had personal knowledge of the subject, because his mother was a probation officer in Massachusetts, and it is an extremely "hard hitting" movie that does not sugar coat its sensitive subject (which includes a lead female character, who disguises herself as a boy, and she has to fend off a would-be rapist). Note that one of the "Wild Boys" is actually a girl posing as a boy, and she is played by Dorothy Coonan, a 20 year old actress, who would marry the 17 year older director William Wellman the following year, and become Dorothy Coonan Wellman. She was his fifth wife, and he was only 37 years old at the time, but he credits her with "having rescued him", and they remained married until his passing in 1975, having had 7 children together (and he had one other child from one of those past 4 wives).
