The Social Democratic Party of Germany (Sozialdemokratische Partei Deutschlands or SPD) is a social-democratic political party in Germany, and was one of two major parties in the early days of the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany). In the years after World War I, this party was part of a coalition government in 1918 to 1921, 1923, and 1928 to 1930. In 1933, Adolf Hitler and the Nazis pushed forward the "Enabling Act", which gave Hitler dictatorial powers, and only the SPD voted against it, and once it was passed, Hitler abolished the SPD, and the members were imprisoned, killed, or went into exile. In 1945, the party was reformed. It remains an important political party in Germany, and today it is one of the two major contemporary political parties in Germany, along with the Christian Democratic Union (CDU).
