He had a memorable small part in 1955's "Night of the Hunter", where he stole the money that set the entire movie in motion. One of his best film roles was as the traitor in Stalag 17. In 1980, he reinvented himself as a comic actor with his hilarious portrayal of Captain Oveur in Airplane. Some of his other movies include: Sergeant Ryker, and TV's "Mission Impossible" (as Mr. Phelps, replacing Steven Hill). He was the brother of James Arness of "Gunsmoke" fame.
