An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (LC; measures 11" x 14" [28 x 36 cm]) (Learn More)

The Case of the Black Cat, the 1936 William C. McGann courtroom lawyer legal crime mystery thriller (based on the Perry Mason series of books by Erle Stanley Gardner; about an eccentric millionaire who makes bequests in his will, including that his caretaker's cat be taken care of for the rest of its life, and then he seemingly dies accidentally, but Perry Mason, who is hired to "defend" the cat, who was being cut out of the will, discovers that the man was actually murdered, and of course, he brilliantly figures out who that murderer was) starring Ricardo Cortez (as Perry Mason), June Travis (as Della Street), Jane Bryan (in her very first movie), Craig Reynolds, Carlyle Moore Jr., Bill Elliott, Garry Owen (as Paul Drake), and George Rosener. Note that the book this movie was based on was called "The Case of the Caretaker's Cat", but "The Black Cat" had been a giant success for Universal, and Warner Bros. changed the title of this movie to "The Case of the Black Cat", even though the cat in question wasn't black! Also note that Warner Bros. purchased the rights to these characters in 1934, and the first movie in the series was "The Case of the Howling Dog" starring Warren William. William played Mason in three more entries, and then Ricardo Cortez took over in 1936 for "The Case of the Black Cat". "The Case of the Stuttering Bishop", made the following year, was the sixth and final of the series, with Donald Woods in the lead role, and after that, the next Perry Mason on screen would be Raymond Burr in the classic 1960s TV series! Reportedly, Erle Stanley Gardner did not like Ricardo Cortez's performance, so this was his only time as Perry Mason (which is ironic, because many fans of the genre feel that Cortez was excellent!). Also, note that Mason's detective assistant had been called "Spudsy Drake" prior to this movie, but here he was now "Paul Drake", which remained his name for many decades! Finally, note that the original director of the movie was Alan Crosland, but he died during filming, and he was replaced by William C. McGann.

Important Added Info: Note that this card has a stamp on the back that indicates it came from the legendary "Cozy Theater" collection! Also note that we have a scan of both the front and the back of this lobby card, which should greatly help you see what defects it has.

Condition: very good. The card has darkened somewhat, typical of Warner Bros. lobby cards of this period. There is small paper loss in the top right blank corner. Otherwise, the card is in nice condition. Note that this lobby card is completely unrestored and there is not a single piece of tape on either the front or back!
