An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" Movie Still (Learn More) Tarzan Finds a Son!, the 1939 Richard Thorpe Africa jungle action adventure fantasy thriller ("ALL NEW! The First Tarzan Picture in 3 Years!"; "Based upon the characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs") starring Johnny Weissmuller (in the title role as Tarzan), Maureen O'Sullivan (as Jane), Johnny Sheffield (billed as "John Sheffield"; as "Boy"), Ian Hunter, Henry Stephenson, Frieda Inescort, Henry Wilcoxon, Laraine Day, Morton Lowry, Gavin Muir, and Cheetah (the chimpanzee). Note that in the books, Tarzan and Jane were married, and there was nothing wrong with them having a son. But in the movies, the producers feared that their son would be considered "illegitimate", so they had him "found" in the jungle (and he was referred to as "Tarzan Jr." in some of the early advertising, but that was dropped, perhaps because it made it obvious he was really Weissmuller's son!). Also, the movie originally ended with Jane dying, because Maureen O'Sullivan didn't want to make anymore Tarzan movies. But fans protested mightily, and the ending was quickly changed so that she survived, and Maureen O'Sullivan was convinced to appear in two more Tarzan movies! Not only does the still mention that Cheeta has grown to twice that size he was in his last Tarzan picture (and likely they quickly replaced him, for older chimps are FAR more difficult to handle than younger ones!), but the snipe also refers to the working title (see below), and says that Tarzan's son is named "Tarzan, Jr.", when he was actually called "Boy" in the finished movie! Also note that the movie is called "Tarzan in Exile" on this still, which was the working title for this movie (it has that name both on the glued on snipe and stamped on the back of the still)! Also note that a paper snipe was glued to the back of the still, and then folded over to the front. This was done rather than gluing the snipe to the back, so that the snipe could be unfolded and the still could be displayed with the snipe unfolded, which would let moviegoers read the information on the snipe in the lobby (and of course, the snipe would be folded backwards, so it would not show). This was done with many stills of the 1930s, but often, the snipes are either partially or completely lost, because it is easier for them to be torn off. UNLESS OTHERWISE NOTED, THE SNIPE DOES NOT HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE FRONT OF THE STILL! Note that there is also information about the still printed on the back. Condition: fine. There are a very few very faint emulsion scuffs within the image, but they are only noticeable when the still is tilted to the light, and otherwise, the still is in excellent condition!
