An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Chapter #3 (The Reducer Ray) One-Sheet Movie Poster (1sh; measures 27" x 41" [69 x 104 cm]) (Learn More) Superman, the 1948 Spencer Gordon Bennet & Thomas Carr science fiction (sci-fi) comic book superhero serial ("A Columbia Serial"; "Rocketing Into A Mighty Adventure!"; "Challenged by treachery!"; "Racing toward doom!"; "By arrangement with National Comics Publications, Inc."; "Based on the Superman adventure feature appearing in Superman and Action Comics magazines, in daily and Sunday newspapers coast-to-coast and on the Superman radio program broadcast over the Mutual Network.") starring Kirk Alyn (in the title role as Superman/Clark Kent), Noel Neill (who later reprised her role as Lois Lane in the TV show), Carol Forman (as "Spider Lady"), Tommy Bond (as Jimmy Olsen; best remembered as Butch the bully from the Our Gang series), Pierre Watkin (as Perry White), Wheeler Oakman, Nelson Leigh (as Jor-El), Luana Walters (as Lara), Virginia Carroll (as Martha Kent), and Ed Cassidy (as Eben Kent). Note that Superman was created in 1938 as a comic book hero, but it took ten long years for a movie to be made depicting him (perhaps moviemakers were deterred by the expensive budget required to have Superman perform his great feats of strength and flying!). This item is from that very first movie, the serial entitled "Superman"! Republic Pictures had tried to make a Superman serial in 1941, but DC wanted more money than they were willing to pay, and they ended up making a Captain Marvel serial instead. Two years later, they made the first Batman serial, and it would not be for five more years before they finally made this serial! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have only seen a few different chapter one-sheets from this first Superman live action movie, but this is only one of two we have seen where he is pictured in the inset image! Also note that original release one-sheets from this very first Superman movie (released just ten years after Superman was created) have always been very difficult to find, likely because whatever ones still existed in the 1960s were then purchased by comic book collectors when that hobby took off in the 1960s and 1970s. We have only auctioned one one-sheet from any of the chapters of this first serial in the past 12 years, and it might be another many more years before we do so again! Also note that we have seen different chapters of this serial where Superman's costume has strong reds in it, as does the title, and we have seen other chapters where the reds are not nearly as bright, and others where they are very light. We don't know if there were variations in the printings, or if the ones with lighter red colors have fading issues, because we have not seen enough examples of the poster to make a thorough study.Note that a knowledgeable collector believes that Glenn Cravath created the art for this item. However, we cannot be 100% certain. If anyone has definitive proof such as signed original art, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The reds in the poster are not bright, and this could be a result of fading, or the poster could have been printed that way (see above). The poster had small paper loss at the bottom crossfold and tiny paper loss at the other two crossfolds, with some tiny tears and tiny bits of paper loss on parts of some folds, and pinholes in the corners. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
