He appeared on the stage in England beginning in 1926, and he appeared in a few movie shorts in the 1920s, but his acting career really did not begin until 1931. Some of his movies include: Witness for the Prosecution, Spartacus, Mutiny on the Bounty, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Advise and Consent, The Private Life of Henry VIII, and Island of Lost Souls. He was married for many years to Elsa Lanchester, although he was gay. He directed a single movie, "Night of the Hunter", and because it was not financially successful, he never directed another, which is a real shame, because that movie is considered a major classic by most critics! AND Elsa Lanchester was born in 1902. She was an excellent stage and screen actress, but almost all of those accomplishments have faded into obscurity, and today she is mostly remembered for two things. First, that she played both the title role (and the part of Mary Shelley) in Universal's The Bride of Frankenstein in 1935. Her performance was memorable, especially her reaction when she first sees the Frankenstein monster! Second, for being the wife (for 33 years) of gay master actor Charles Laughton. She said she did not discover he was gay until two years into their marriage. They appeared in 10 films together, most notably Witness for the Prosecution and The Private Lives of Henry VIII.
