An Original Vintage Theatrical Folded Half-Sheet Movie Poster (1/2sh; measures 22" x 28" [56 x 71 cm]) (Learn More) The Gold Racket, the 1937 Louis J. Gasnier gold smuggling romantic crime film noir ("Original Story by Howard Higgin"; about a gang of Mexican crooks who are smuggling gold into the U.S. and then they sell it to the U.S. government; the Mexican government asks the U.S. government to send a federal agent to try to stop them, and a female reporter tags along) starring Conrad Nagel, Eleanor Hunt, Fuzzy Knight, Warner Richmond, Frank Milan, Jack Duffy, and Albert J. Smith. Note that until 1933, it was legal for U.S. citizens to own gold, and in fact, there were many gold coins made out of real gold! However, in a very controversial move, President Franklin Roosevelt made owning gold illegal in 1933 (through an "executive order"!), and after that, Americans could not legally own gold, and had to sell it to the government at a fixed price if they had any. So that created a black market for gold, and this movie was about that black market. It was not until 1975 that the above executive order was changed, and Americans could once again legally own gold! Some of these items can ONLY be sent in flat packages, and could not possibly be rolled into a tube. On some of them (for example if it is a size that might ordinarily be rolled in a tube, like a half-sheet), the reason it is in this auction is specifically because we feel it either CAN'T be rolled or because we feel it would be a mistake to roll it, because it might well damage the item. In the case of the few items that could be rolled, we will roll the item in a tube if the new owner insists, but only if they accept that they can't return the item if it is damaged from being rolled. So please bear in mind that this item must be sent in a LARGE flat package (the size of the package will depend on the size of the item), and bear this added expense in mind before placing a bid on it. Condition: fair to good. The poster has much creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of some edges and separation along the foldlines and edges (partially repaired with tape from the back). The poster is very fragile and somewhat difficult to handle. The defects are significant enough that the poster will need to be shipped in a flat shipping package to avoid further damage, so please bear in mind its significant defects and additional cost of shipping before placing a bid.
