An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel "Grande" Movie Poster (1p; measures 46 3/4" x 62 1/4" [119 x 158 cm]) (Learn More) La Belle et la Bete (released in the U.S. in 1947 as "The Beauty and the Beast"), the classic 1946 Jean Cocteau French romantic fantasy adventure (based on the classic fairy tale by Madame Leprince de Beaumont; about a handsome prince who has a spell put on him that turns him into a beast, and he can't change back unless a beautiful woman loves him as he is!) starring Jean Marais (in a dual role as both la Bete and the Prince), Josette Day (in the title role as Belle), Mila Parely, Nane Germon, Michael Auclair, and Marcel Andre. Note that this movie had wonderful special effects (both by 1946 standards, and even by present day standards) and that it is one of the best loved fantasy movies of all time. In 1991, Walt Disney turned this into an animated feature length musical, and it has since been turned into a Broadway show and a live action movie, but this version still remains the best of all! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jean-Denis Malcles Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned three examples of this first release French one-panel, which is a "country of origin" poster for this French movie, and the last one was 18 years ago (they sold for $18,400, $7,200, and $7,150!). This original 1946 French one-panel poster has red DisCina logos at bottom left and bottom right. There is a 1950s re-release that does not have those boxes, and has less color than the original, and sometimes they are mistakenly sold as first releases. But the poster offered here absolutely is the very rare first release French one-panel from 1946! What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was trimmed by 1/2" on the left border and 1" on the right border, and only solid black background was affected. It was trimmed by 1/4" on the bottom border. Someone blacked over the black area below all the printing (perhaps to "even it out"), and that included the printer information, but it is still readable through the black when you look closely. There were creases, tears, and small paper loss along parts of several folds, more so in the upper left and lower right of the image. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. It was linenbacked many years ago, and the person who backed it recreated the missing blank areas around the edges with solid black, and they backed the poster with no excess, and they performed slight restoration to the above defects, so you can still clearly see where the tears and small paper loss was when you look closely at the poster. One might display this rare and desirable poster as it is, or certainly, any top restorer could remove it from the old linen and perform more modern restoration. Please bear in mind the poster's defects and look closely at our super-sized image before placing a bid on this most collectible French one-panel poster. Learn More about condition grades
