A Linenbacked French Advertising Poster (measures 45" x 61 1/2" [114 x 156 cm]) (Learn More) Palais De La Nouveaute ("Palace Of Novelty") was a Paris department store (which sold furnishings and housewares on credit/installment plans) which was founded by Jacques Francois Crespin in 1856. After Crespin's death in 1888, it was taken over by Georges Dufayel and in 1890, it was renamed Les Grands Magasins Dufayel (Dufayel Department Stores). He gradually enlarged the store to include a concert hall, theatre, and winter garden, and offered free lectures, science demonstrations, films, and performances there to draw in customers. The building was topped with a dome surmounted by a searchlight and decorated with sculptures by Alexandre Falguiere and Jules Dalou. Dufayel died in 1916 and the department store closed in 1930. During World War II (WWII) it was used as storage by the Nazis and then the Red Cross. After the war, the National Bank of Paris purchased the building and owns it to this day If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that someone wrote "c1940" in the excess linen in the bottom right. However, we think that was from many years ago, and that they were just guessing, because our research indicates this store closed in 1930, which would mean the poster is from the 1920s. If anyone knows more about this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had creases, scuffs, and tiny bits of paper loss in the left vertical fold and in the far left of the horizontal folds, with a much lesser amount of wear on the rest of the folds and in the borders. Overall, the poster was in very good condition prior to linenbacking. The restorer backed the poster "in the European style", meaning that they did not do restoration to the defects described above.
