MY FAIR LADY ('56 stage) MY FAIR LADY ('56 stage) playbill OR search current auctions Auction History Result 6b104 MY FAIR LADY signed playbill 1957 by BOTH Julie Andrews AND Rex Harrison! Date Sold 5/14/2019Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Autographed Stage Play Playbill (measures 6 1/2" x 9" [17 x 23 cm]; 68 pages) (Learn More) My Fair Lady, the 1956 - 1960s stage play musical production ("Adapted from Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion"; "Music by Frederick Loewe"; "Book and Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner"; "In the critics' prize musical") starring (in 1956) Julie Andrews (as Eliza Doolittle), Rex Harrison (as Henry Higgins), Robert Coote (as Colonel Pickering), Stanley Holloway (as Alfred P. Doolittle), and Cathleen Nesbitt (as Mrs. Higgins). Note that this was a long-running show (both on and off Broadway) and the above cast was not the same throughout the years. Of course, this was the center of a major controversy! When Hollywood went to make a movie of this hit play in 1964 (after it completed its Broadway run), they were fine with retaining the lead stars of the stage production EXCEPT for Julie Andrews, because she wasn't a big enough "name"! They replaced her with Audrey Hepburn, which was especially surprising, given that Miss Hepburn could not sing the part, and Marni Nixon was brought in to sing the songs for her (but that was uncredited and carefully kept under wraps, and Miss Nixon was not allowed to admit to it!). This was very unfortunate for Julie Andrews, but in an unusual twist of fate, she made Mary Poppins that year, and, while My Fair Lady swept the top Oscars with the Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actor awards, Miss Andrews won the Best Actress award over Miss Hepburn (who wasn't even nominated!)! Important Added Info: Note that this item has been personally autographed (signed) by BOTH Julie Andrews AND Rex Harrison! Our consignor purchased this signed program book from an advanced collector of stage play memorabilia in 2005, and both he and we are certain the autographs are absolutely genuine (but he does not have a certificate of authenticity). As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: good to very good. There is paper loss in the bottom right corner of the cover and on the first interior 28 pages, but in all cases, solely blank white paper is affected. There is also slight darkening around the edges of the cover and a small tear in the middle right (see our images). Learn More about condition grades
