An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French One-Panel Movie Poster (measures 47" x 63"; known as a 'grande' poster in France) (Learn More) Stalag Seventeen, the classic 1953 Billy Wilder (nominated for the Best Director Academy Award for this film) World War II (WWII) military prisoner-of-war (POW) comedy ("The star-spangled laugh-loaded salute to our P.W. heroes!"; "'Stalag 17'...The address - of a prisoner of war camp!"; "Based on the play by Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski") starring William Holden (winner of the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; as Sefton), Don Taylor (as Lt. Dunbar), Otto Preminger (as the German commandant Col. Von Scherbach), Robert Strauss (in his nominated for Best Supporting Actor Academy Award role as Stanislas Kasava), Harvey Lembeck, Richard Erdman, Peter Graves (as Price), Neville Brand, and Sig Ruman (as the German Sgt. Schulz). Can anyone tell me how or why actor Don Taylor was given second billing in this movie? He did not have a major part at all! If anyone knows, please e-mail us and we will post it here. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Grinsson Important Added Info: Note that this French one-panel measures 47" x 63". Condition: good. The poster had areas of paper loss in the top and middle of the vertical foldline, and in the extreme right of the middle horizontal foldline and in the left 1/4 of the top horizontal foldline. There were some areas of paper at some crossfolds, and some creases, tears, and areas of paper loss in the borders, with a larger area of paper loss in the top right blank corner. It appears that this poster was given to a linenbacker who did a pretty good job of backing it and patching the missing areas, but then the linenbacker did not complete the restoration (for unknown reasons). I would say that any talented restorer could almost certainly finish the restoration of this poster without re-backing the poster, and after proper restoration, the poster will look great, but of course, there will be paint restoration in the areas of paper loss (which you can clearly see in our image). This poster was linenbacked, and it had significant defects which were only somewhat repaired during the linenbacking process, or were not repaired at all (we describe both the defects as well as the quality of the restoration below, and based on those comments, you can easily determine which type of poster it is). You should also look at our "super-sized" image of the actual poster (we are the only major auction company we know of that gives accurate detailed pre-restoration information about linenbacked posters to our bidders, but we wish everyone did!).
