An Original Vintage Theatrical Movie Lobby Card (measures 11" x 14") (Learn More) Mr. Moto's Gamble, the 1938 James Tinling Asian detective boxing sports crime mystery thriller ("Thousands saw it happen... but - Only One knew it was Murder!"; "Based on the character created by J.P. Marquand"; the third entry in this series of popular movies) starring Peter Lorre (in the title role as Mr. Moto), Keye Luke (as Lee Chan), Dick Baldwin, Lynn Bari, Douglas Fowley, Jayne Regan, Harold Huber, and Max 'Slapsie Maxie' Rosenbloom. Note that Fox had had great success with its Chinese detective, Charlie Chan, so it seemed natural for them to start this second series featuring a Japanese detective. It did not start until 1937, perhaps because they did not have an actor suitable for the lead role, but Peter Lorre had substance abuse issues, and he was probably happy to get the work. Fox made seven movies in just three years, but then they stopped the series, likely because of the rise of anti-Japanese sentiment in the U.S., as World War II neared. Interestingly, this movie started as a Charlie Chan film with Warner Oland, but Oland abandoned the movie after filming had begun and Fox changed it into a Mr. Moto vehicle, which explains why Keye Luke is playing his Number-One Son role and why Mr. Moto mimics some of Charlie Chan's mannerisms NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Condition: very good. light stains and light smudging in several areas around the edges of the card; a couple of tiny dot stains within the image (in solid areas), but otherwise the image area is in quite nice condition; it seems the entire card might have been lightly water stained at one time, but if so, it left no discoloration; the right half of the card is very slightly rippled, but it is more "felt" than seen Learn More about condition grades
