Date Sold 4/14/2024Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Belgian Movie Poster (measures 14" x 18 1/2" [36 x 47 cm]) (Learn More) Mark of the Gorilla, the 1950 William A. Berke action adventure jungle thriller ("Johnny snatches jungle beauty from gold-looting gorilla-men!"; "Johnny's weirdest jungle adventure!"; "Based upon the famous King Features Syndicate newspaper feature", which was the comic strip sometimes drawn by Alex Raymond; about Nazis who disguise themselves as gorillas so that they can steal gold from the natives, but Jungle Jim stops them!) starring Johnny Weissmuller ("as Jungle Jim"), Trudy Marshall, Suzanne Dalbert, Onslow Stevens, Robert Purcell, Pierce Lyden, Neyle Morrow, Selmer Jackson, and Steve Calvert (as the Gorilla Man). Note that in 1948, Steve Calvert bought Ray 'Crash' Corrigan's gorilla costume, which Corrigan had been using in movies since at least 1932. He appeared in 12 movies between 1948 and 1958 as a gorilla wearing Corrigan's costume! There is an oddity to this movie! The plot summary we have seen refers to multiple Nazis in gorilla suits, and Steve Calvert definitely played one of the gorillas, but we have seen a still from the movie that shows two other men in gorilla suits side by side. But they are not credited, so does anyone know who played the other gorillas? NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Artist: Jiel Important Added Info: Note that we have only previously auctioned two examples of this Belgian poster (we auctioned one of those examples twice). One of those examples has now been reconsigned to us (the person who purchased it had it linenbacked), so this is still only one of two examples we have ever auctioned! Also note that this poster has been trimmed and it now measures 14" x 18 1/2" [36 x 47 cm]. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster originally had a blank top that was neatly trimmed off (this is commonly done with Belgian posters, similar to how the blank top is trimmed off of U.S. window cards). The poster also had creases, defects, areas of paper loss and tears of varying lengths along parts of some edges, several tax stamps at lower right and some staining at bottom. Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects.
