An Original 1929 (from the first release of this movie in France) Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 1/2" x 31" [60 x 79 cm]) (Learn More) Alraune (released in the U.S. as "A Daughter of Destiny", and released in some other English-speaking countries as "Mandrake"), the 1928 Henrik Galeen German silent science fiction (sci-fi) fantasy horror thriller (based on the novel by Hanns Heinz Ewers; about a scientist wanting to find out if a person's personality is genetic or environmental; he artificially inseminates a prostitute with the semen of a hanged man [which, in German mythology, was used to grow the "mandrake root", and in some myths it is the blood that is the source, and sometimes the root was given to a woman wanting to become pregnant, and supposedly eating it could make her pregnant, but the resulting child would grow into a soulless person], to see if the resulting child is doomed to grow up evil in spite of good upbringing; he raises the girl himself telling her he is her father, and she does in some ways become evil, and worse yet, her "father" is drawn to her, and when she rejects him, he goes insane) starring Brigitte Helm (in the title role as Alraune), Paul Wegener, Ivan Petrovich, Wolfgang Zilzer, and Louis Ralph. Note that the only existing print of this movie was constructed from fragments found in different film archives, and it is almost surely incomplete. There are differences in reviews of the movie as to exactly how the plot goes, and it may well be the result of seeing different prints, some of which may have added film. But it is very sad that this movie is completely forgotten, except by film buffs, because it combines the talents of Henrik Galeen (who directed The Golem and Nosferatu), Paul Wegener (who starred as The Golem in three different versions), and Brigitte Helm (who starred in Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" the previous year), and it is certainly a fascinating movie, using much of the Frankenstein concept, but changing the sex, and adding the incestuous love of the creator for his "creation"! This was a silent movie, and it was remade just two years later, again with Brigitte Helm in the starring role, but with mostly different actors in the other roles. Posters from either this 1928 version or the 1930 version are beyond rare! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this 1929 first release French poster! Not only that, but the ONLY item we have ever auctioned from this movie is a single German program. What IS linenbacking?
