An Original Vintage Promotional Advertising Standee (measures 12 3/4" x 16" [32 x 41 cm]) (Learn More) Marilyn Monroe is one of the greatest larger-than-life movie stars ever of the 1950s, and surely the greatest sex symbol of all time! She appeared in several memorable movies including: Some Like It Hot, The Prince & the Showgirl, All About Eve, The Asphalt Jungle, The Misfits, The Seven Year Itch, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Monkey Business, and Niagara. The last film that she worked on was Something's Got To Give in 1962. 20th Century Fox blamed Marilyn for the production being behind schedule, and fired her in June (the film was never completed). In August, she was found dead in her home from an apparent drug overdose, and her death was ruled a suicide (though there are theories that foul play was involved, and even in 2024, many people do not feel it was an "accidental" death). Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this really cool promotional advertising standee (and we don't know that any others survive), which is an advertising tie-in between 20th Century-Fox and Bluebird stockings, showing Marilyn Monroe wearing fishnet stockings while leaning on a guitar, in a scene from "River of No Return". However, the person who designed the standee chose to credit her at the bottom of it as "GLAMOROUS STAR of 'A 20th CENTURY-FOX CINEMASCOPE PICTURE' The Seven Year Itch" Since River of No Return came out in early 1954, and The Seven Year Itch came out in early 1955, it seems certain that this standee dates from between those two releases, and it likely was created right before The Seven Year Itch came out, so that it could promote both the upcoming movie and the Bluebird stockings, and that the image from River of No Return was used solely because Marilyn had their stockings on in it! Finally, note that there is a well made snipe with Marilyn Monroe's name glued over the area where the name is. Because the standee is very thick, we can't see through the back of it, and shining a strong light on the snipe does not allow you to see through it. It's possible that there was a spelling error or, as a knowledgeable collector pointed out, perhaps it wasn't even her name! There was another Bluebird standee that looked exactly the same but featured Betty Grable and mentioned her 1955 movie "How to Be Very Very Popular". Perhaps there was a printing error or oversight when they reused the design? If anyone knows more about any of this, please e-mail us and we will post it here. Condition: very good. The standee backing is intact. There is minor wear around the edges, but otherwise, the standee is in excellent condition, and the still that is glued onto it is also in excellent condition!
