An Original Vintage Theatrical Silk Banner Movie Poster (measures 39 3/4" x 52 1/2" [101 x 133 cm]) (Learn More) Tobacco Road, the 1941 John Ford Georgia poor uneducated family comedy melodrama ("At last... it's on the screen!"; based on the classic novel by Erskine Caldwell, which became a Broadway play in 1933, and set a then-record of 3,281 performances, running until 1941; when the play finally ended, 20th Century-Fox and producer Darryl F. Zanuck made this film version of it, and because it had taken so long to reach the screen, it was given the tagline "At last... It's on the screen!"; about a family of uneducated Georgia farmers who have valuable land that is ultimately taken away from them, and director John Ford had difficulty translating the play to the screen, because of the censorship of the day; Gene Tierney and Dana Andrews were the romantic leads, but they ended up with only a few minutes of screen time together, and Charley Grapewin's character "stole" the picture!) starring Charley Grapewin, Marjorie Rambeau, Gene Tierney (in her third movie role!), William Tracy, Dana Andrews, Slim Summerville, Ward Bond, Grant Mitchell, and Zeffie Tilbury NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that in the 1930s and 1940s, movie studios made silk burgees (also called silk banners) for most major releases. These were printed on a silk (or silk-like) material, with a gold fringe at the bottom, and usually with an opening at the top through which a wooden pole could be inserted, usually with a rope attached to both ends of the pole, so that the burgee could be hung from a nail at the theater. Few silk burgees are known to survive, and many collectors are not even aware of their existence! Condition: good. There are some water stains scattered in the banner and the top is tattered and the fringe is missing from the bottom. There are other defects as seen in our image. Please do not bid on this banner unless you can accept its defects described above or are willing to pay to have them properly restored. Learn More about condition grades
