An Original Vintage Unfolded Navy Military Recruitment Poster (measures 28 1/4" x 42" [72 x 107 cm]) (Learn More) Attention!, the 1940 U.S. World War II (WWII) recruitment poster ("The attention of all young men, who are citizens of the United States, is invited to the advantages incident to enlistment in the United States Navy."; "Age limits 18 and under 31"; "See the nearest Recruiting Officer") encouraging all able-bodied citizens to enlist in the U.S. Navy, and featuring Matt Murphey art of several warships surrounding an aircraft carrier. Note that the man who did the art on this poster was not only a wonderful artist, but he was also a really wonderful man! He was born in 1898 in Redding, California. When he turned 18, he joined the Navy, and served in World War I, and unlike many men of his time and age, he stayed in the Navy after the war ended. In the early 1930s, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor, and he was the postmaster there, and he was able to make his amateur art part of his job, when he created graphics for letter covers. He married a young woman from Southern California in 1933. In 1940, Murphey created a series of posters, including this one, for Navy recruitment, so it predates the U.S.'s entry into World War II, showing that at least some in the government realized that the U.S. would surely soon enter the war, and were starting recruitment drives! But after Pearl Harbor, Murphey wanted to return to combat, even though he was 44. On February 7, 1943, the ship he was on, the U.S.S. Henry R. Mallory was torpedoed by a German U-boat, and 272 men died, including Murphey (although the news was withheld from the public until November 1944, because at that time, bad news was withheld under "The War Powers Act of 1941", which allowed the President to censor news that might negatively affect public morale. Murphey had spent a total of 27 years in the Navy, including both World Wars, and he was survived by his widow, Emma Hunter Murphey. He was a true American hero!) Artist: Matt Murphey Condition: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It has paper loss in the bottom blank border, with some small tears around the edges. It has some creases scattered in the blue background areas and a very few within the image. Please look at our super-sized image to get a good sense of the exact condition of this item.
