A Vintage Hardcover Book (measures 5" x 7 1/2" [13 x 19 cm]; 219 pages) (Learn More) H.G. Wells' Island of Lost Souls, the classic 1933 Erle C. Kenton Universal genetic experimentation fantasy horror thriller ("The Panther Woman lured men on - only to destroy them - body and soul!"; "The Panther Woman -the body of a siren - the heart of a child - the soul of a cruel Jungle Killer"; loosely based on the novel 'The Island of Dr. Moreau' by H.G. Wells) starring Charles Laughton (as Dr. Moreau), Bela Lugosi, Richard Arlen, Leila Hyams (as "Ruth Thomas"), Kathleen Burke (billed as "The Panther Woman"; in her first movie role!), Arthur Hohl, Stanley Fields, Paul Hurst, and a bunch of "manimals" (half man, half animal!) NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that we have never before auctioned this hardcover book! Note that it, together with three of the other similar movie edition books we are auctioning, comes in a really cool special made slipcase that is like a "clam shell", in that you put the book in it and it closes securely around it. It appears these are generic cases, but each of them has a cool printed paper on the spine with the title and author of the specific book! A book collector tells us that these custom cases cost around $125 to $250 each (depending on how elaborate they are), but the winner of this auction gets this custom case as a free bonus! Note that this is the Duffield and Green first movie edition in its original dust jacket. Here are some more details about these books: this company (like Grosset & Dunlap) was a publisher that made a deal with some studios to publish "movie edition" hardcovers of novels that were currently adapted into movies. They would republish the original novel as the movie came out (or soon after), and they would put a dust jacket on the book that showed the stars of the movie, and they would include several pages of images from the movie scattered in the book. These books were incredibly popular in the 1920s and 1930s. Note that we have pictured the front cover, the title page, and the interior page that shows the publishing information, and one or more interior 2-page spreads. Because we know that the dust jacket is an important part of the value of this book, we also pictured the entire dust jacket opened up. Between that image and our other images, you should be able to get a good sense of the overall condition of this book. Note that this is one of an amazing collection of 30 movie edition books (and a few closely related items) that were consigned to us from a man who has collected such books for over half a century! Included are some of the most rare and desirable of these books, and all have the original dust jackets (many times such books lost their dust jackets over the years and they are far more rare with the dust jacket). This is a very rare opportunity to obtain one or more of these books, most of which we have either never auctioned before or only auctioned once before! Note: We have 14 images of this book, but due to a space limitation, only TEN of the 14 images are displayed above. However, there is a "supersize" link to the right of those images that lets you see the other 4. Condition: very good. The dust jacket has creases and small tears in the top and bottom, and there are smudges and faint stains on the blank back cover and some on the front cover. The book itself is in pretty nice condition (see our many images). Learn More about condition grades
