The General Died at Dawn, the 1936 Lewis Milestone romantic China war mercenary spy espionage adventure thriller ("Two great stars in Clifford Odet's thrilling adventure drama of today's turbulent, war ravaged China!"; about an American mercenary fighting on the side of peasants in a Chinese rebellion, and he is given a lot of money to buy weapons, and he is captured, and he and his girlfriend are tortured to get them to reveal where the money is) starring Gary Cooper, Madeleine Carroll, William Frawley, Dudley Digges, Akim Tamiroff (in the title role as General Yang; nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for this film), Porter Hall, and J.M. Kerrigan
