An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked One-Sheet Movie Poster (measures 28" x 41") (Learn More) Ginsberg the Great, the 1927 Byron Haskin Jewish silent circus sideshow magician comedy ("Based on the story by Anthony Coldeway") starring George Jessel, Audrey Ferris, Gertrude Astor, Theodore Lorch, Stanley J. "Tiny" Stanford (as a circus strongman), and Akka the Chimp. Jessel had played the lead in "The Jazz Singer" on Broadway, but Warner Bros. felt they needed to go with the much bigger star Al Jolson in its first sound movie (and of course, Samson Raphaelson had loosely based "The Jazz Singer" on Jolson's life, so he was more appropriate to play the part, even though Jessel had played it on Broadway). After "The Jazz Singer", Jessel made a few movies for Warner Bros., including this one, but he did not achieve much screen success in those early sound movies. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster had small paper loss at the crossfolds and creases, tears, separation, and tiny paper loss in parts of the vertical foldline and creases and a few small tears in the horizontal folds. There were pinholes, creases, tears, and some small paper loss around the edges of the poster, and smudges in the solid yellow background areas. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was pretty well backed, but you can see some signs of the restoration of the above defects. If I owned this great poster, I would have it re-backed by a talented professional, so it would look really wonderful (and I imagine there is an excellent chance it is the only surviving example of this poster!).
