A Linenbacked Advertising Poster (measures 29 1/2" x 45 1/4" [75 x 115 cm]) (Learn More)

The King was an automobile mainly built in Detroit from 1911 to 1923. Charles Brady King built his first car in Detroit in 1896, and it became the first gasoline automobile to be successfully driven on the streets of Detroit (Henry Ford reportedly followed behind on a bicycle the maiden voyage of the King). King worked for various other car companies before establishing the King Motor Car Company in 1911. In December 1914, a King V8 was introduced and starting in 1916, all Kings were 8-cylinder models. Production declined from a peak of 3000 in 1916 to a company low of 240 in 1923. The company limped along under different ownership before finally closing down in 1925.
Artist: WG
Important Added Info: Note that this poster is promoting King V8 models which were to be displayed during an automobile show which was held at the Grand Central Palace in New York City from December 31st to January 8th.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good. The poster was never folded. It had some scuffs scattered in the solid background areas and some minor border wear. It has staining in the top center. If that occurred before the poster was backed, then the poster was in "good" condition prior to linenbacking. If it occurred after, then the poster was in "very good to fine" condition prior to backing. Either way, the staining at top center, which looks like the result of a large piece of tape coming in contact with the poster, can certainly be restored by any talented restorer, without re-backing the poster, but bear in mind this defect before bidding.
