Date Sold 2/19/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Autographed French 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" [9 x 14 cm] Postcard (Learn More) Abel Gance was born in 1889. An amazing pioneering French director, he was pretty forgotten (except by film buffs) until 1979 when Kevin Brownlow (after spending many years reconstructing it from the surviving prints) showed Gance's 1927 masterpiece Napoleon, in England, using the original three projector format that had been used in 1927, decades before Cinerama. Two years later Francis Ford Coppola arranged for a series of showings throughout the U.S., with a live orchestra conducted by his father. It is wonderful to note that Gance lived long enough to FINALLY see his great film receive the acclaim it fully deserved, passing away in 1981 at the age of 92. I had the good fortune to see Napoleon in Los Angeles in 1981, and it really lives up to its reputation! He passed away in 1981 at the age of 92. Important Added Info: Note that this postcard has been personally autographed (signed) by Abel Gance (he hand wrote this postcard; we don't speak French, so we don't know what he said; if somebody will translate it and send it to us, we would appreciate it)! Note that we can't read the postmark on this postcard, but we previously auctioned a different postcard from Mr. Gance that was very similar to this (and that one sold for $116), and on that you could read the date, which was 1911, so we imagine this is from a very similar time, especially because they have the same stamp. Our consignor is a longtime collector who purchased this signed item from a reputable dealer. He does not have a certificate of authenticity, but we believe the signature to likely be authentic. As is true of all the signed items we are currently auctioning, we give every buyer 30 days in which to review what they purchased (although we prefer they do any "authenticating" while the auction is "live" and before they place a bid) and they can return any item as long as it is within 30 days of the end of the auction. On non-signed items, we give a "lifetime guarantee" on everything we auction, but on signed items, we give the above modified guarantee of 30 days after the auction closes. Condition: very good.
