An Original Vintage Theatrical 8" x 10" [20 x 25 cm] Movie Still (Learn More)

Sunny Side Up, the 1929 David Butler romantic love triangle rich-man/poor-girl musical comedy ("The screen's first original all talking, singing, dancing musical comedy"; "Original songs, story and dialog by De Sylva, Brown and Henderson"; "Dances staged by Seymour Felix"; "Hear Janet Gaynor sing"; "assisted by a star cast and a host of beautiful girls"; about a rich man with a fiancee who flirts with other men, and he accidentally bumps into a poor girl and brings her back to his mansion to make his fiancee jealous, but then he realizes it is the poor girl he loves) starring Janet Gaynor, Charles Farrell, Sharon Lynn, El Brendel, Frank Richardson, and Marjorie White. Note that this plot was really old and tired, even in 1929, but the combination of the great appeal of the leads (Charles Farrell and Janet Gaynor, both in their first talking picture), plus really fine music by the Broadway team of DeSylva, Brown and Henderson (who would go on to create many Fox musicals) made this movie a real "winner", even though neither of the leads could sing! Fox claimed that this was the first all-talking musical movie, and it may well be that. It also has many innovative musical sequences that surely inspired Busby Berkeley just a short time later at Warner Bros., and those who have seen it say this is an excellent movie, even today!
