Date Sold 6/20/2017Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked Thirty by Forty Movie Poster (30x40; measures 30" x 40" [76 x 102 cm]) (Learn More) House on Haunted Hill (some stills identify the movie as "House of Haunted Hill" but a collector tells us that he saw the film on the opening weekend and it was titled "House on Haunted Hill"), the 1959 William Castle haunted house horror thriller ("First film with the amazing new wonder Emergo [specially installed for this engagement] The thrills fly right into the audience!"; "The 13 greatest shocks of all time! Consult your doctor! Bring your seat belts! See it with someone with warm hands!") starring Vincent Price, Carol Ohmart, Richard Long, Alan Marshal, Elisha Cook Jr., Carolyn Craig, Julie Mitchum, and Leona Anderson. Note that the "gimmick" for this movie (Emergo) described above consisted of an actual fake skeleton that was pulled out from above the screen on a wire and dragged across the audience when the skeleton on the movie comes out of its box, and then it is reeled back in across the audience, making two trips. This required special equipment, and apparently many theaters chose not to install it, because the pressbook has special ads for it only for theaters that have the Emergo equipment. We have read that some of the theaters that DID install the equipment had it uninstalled, once teen boys learned of it, because they would come to the showings with slingshots and damage the skeleton with rocks or BBs! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. If you know who did the art (if any), please let us know. Important Added Info: Note that we have never auctioned this poster before! We previously auctioned a different 30x40 from this movie (six years ago), which was very similar, but had completely different coloring and some differences in the top left and top right background areas. The 30x40 from this movie is FAR more rare than the one-sheet, which is regularly auctioned. Because the poster is a heavy stock poster that has been linenbacked, we know that it would be a big mistake to roll it. Therefore, we will send this poster in a very large flat package to the new owner. Please consider the cost of shipping in a very large flat package before bidding on this very rare and cool poster! Note that this 30x40 is a silkscreen printed poster with an actual color photo which has neatly been "tipped in" (glued to the top center of the poster). This is how almost all 30x40s were made at this time! Paper banners were also commonly made in this way at that time, and it makes for a striking poster, and few people would realize that it is not printed on a single piece, unless they examine the poster closely. Note that the silkscreen portions of this poster usually pick up scuff marks far more easily than other posters of this period (this was caused by the method of silkscreen printing, and is very common on these posters, and is not considered a major defect, unless it is very noticeable or distracting). Finally, note that this art is often attributed to Reynold Brown but we cannot be 100% certain. If anyone has definitive evidence as to who created the art, please e-mail us and we will post it here. What IS linenbacking? Learn More Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: good to very good. The poster was never folded. It had a 7" tear in the lower left border that extended through the purple background and ended at the tip of the top left of the "H" of "HOUSE". The poster also had many scuffs and areas of surface paper loss in the bottom background area, slightly affecting the lettering of the credits in the center. It had small tears and creases around the edges of the poster and it had scuffs scattered in the solid colored background areas (which, as noted above, is typical of these silkscreen 30x40s). Overall, the poster was in good condition prior to linenbacking. A talented restorer backed the poster onto linen and performed excellent restoration to the above areas. You can see slight signs of the above defects and the restoration of the above defects, but from any reasonable viewing distance, the poster displays wonderfully! Learn More about condition grades
