An Original Vintage German Film Program (measures 8" x 9" [20 x 23 cm]; 6 pages) (Learn More) Der Herrscher (released in English-speaking countries as "The Ruler"), the 1937 Veit Harlan German Nazi propaganda family relationship big business melodrama (about the owner of a munitions company, obviously based on Krupp, and he takes a young mistress and plans to marry her, which causes his adult children to plot to have him declared insane so they can inherit his wealth; in the source play, he dies, but it was rewritten for the Nazis by Thea von Harbou and in their version, the owner disowns his family, then gives his entire fortune to the state, and he declares "He who is born to lead needs no other teacher than his own genius.", which certainly seems to be a major endorsement of Hitler!; based on the play by Gerhart Hauptmann; this movie was put on the conditional list because it has "distorted values regarding general living standards") starring Emil Jannings, Paul Wagner, Maria Koppenhofer, Hannes Stelzer, and Hilde Korbor. Note that this is a "conditional" movie. This refers to around 40 movies that were made in Germany between 1933 and 1945, during the time the Nazis were in power in Germany. These movies are considered to be propaganda movies, which glorify the Nazi regime and their ideals. Immediately after World War II, a list of over 100 movies that were made between 1933 and 1945 was created, and those movies were not allowed to be shown at any time in Germany or Austria. Over the next decade, around 60 of those movies were taken off the list so that they are allowed to be shown (but rarely are), and those movies are known as "forbidden movies", because even though they can now be shown, they could not be shown at all in the years right after World War II. The remaining 40 or so movies (including this one) are known as "conditional" movies, because they are still not allowed to be shown in Germany or Austria, even in the present day, with the sole exception being when they are shown in an educational context, like at a university, and a speaker talks before and after the movie. Note that director Veit Harlan was one of the most infamous of the Nazi film directors, directing Jud Suss and many other virulent anti-Jewish Nazi movies during World War II. After the war, almost ALL of his movies were banned, not just the anti-Jewish ones, and he was put on trial for war crimes. But in 1950, after several trials, he was set free, and in 1951, he resumed making movies, making a dozen of them until his passing in 1964. NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Note that this program was published by Das Programm von Heute, a different type of program that is far more rare than the regularly seen German programs. The program has six pages, but it is printed on a large single sheet that is tri-folded (we have photographed both sides of the program completely unfolded). Condition: very good. There are four small diagonal razor cuts in the front cover. This is NOT a defect, because these programs were distributed with "Ross autograph cards", which would be inserted into the slits, and then given out at showings where that star appeared in person, and the attendees could try to get that star's autograph on the card.
