DEEDS GOES TO TOWN candid deluxe 10.75x13.75 still 1936 portrait of Gary Cooper by Lippman! Date Sold 3/14/2023Sold For: Login or Register to see sold price. An Original Vintage Theatrical Deluxe 10 3/4" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm] Movie Still (Learn More) Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, the classic 1936 Frank Capra (winner of the Best Director Academy Award for this film) romantic inheritance comedy ("A new laugh-and-love team takes America by storm!"; "Rocking America with laughter!"; "Story by Clarence Budington Kelland"; "Screen play by Robert Riskin"; "Another great Frank Capra Production"; nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award; about a small town "rube" from Mandrake Falls, Vermont, who inherits millions of dollars, and he goes to New York City to claim it, and everyone tries to swindle him out of the money, and a female reporter poses as his girlfriend to write stories about him, and he tries to give all the money away in loans to poor farmers who were hurt by the Great Depression, and he is given a sanity hearing, and he refuses to speak because of his girlfriend's deception, but it all works out quite nicely in the end!) starring Gary Cooper (nominated for the Best Actor Academy Award for this film; in the title role as Longfellow Deeds), Jean Arthur (as Babe Bennett), George Bancroft, Lionel Stander, Douglass Dumbrille, H.B. Warner, Margaret McWade, Margaret Seddon, Emma Dunn, Walter Catlett, and Margarete Matzenauer. This movie was re-made in 2002 (as "Mr. Deeds") by Adam Sandler, with himself in the starring role. Also note that the plot of this movie is very similar to Times Square Lady, which came out the previous year, but with the sex of the heroes reversed (and the source stories for the two were written by different people). Interestingly, this movie was originally titled "Opera Hat", and it seems that it centered on the part of the story where Cooper becomes the head of the New York Opera House, and while that subplot was retained, the plot was greatly expanded! NOTE: Click on linked names to see a biography. Important Added Info: Note that this wonderful candid still shows a head and shoulders Columbia studio portrait by Irving Lippman of Gary Cooper playing the "whimsical young man who tackles New York single-handed"! Note that the movie is called "Opera Hat" on the back of this still, which was the working title for this movie (and someone crossed that out and wrote "A Gentleman Goes to Town")! Also note that this still measures 10 3/4" x 13 3/4" [27 x 35 cm], but it has not been trimmed, and this is a deluxe still printed on double weight paper stock. Note that we are currently auctioning over 100 ultra rare 11x14 stills (some measure slightly smaller) that are mostly from the 1930s, all in separate auctions! The highlight of these is the 58 of them that were consigned to us by a collector who acquired them many years ago, and they feature wonderful images of many of the greatest 1930s Hollywood stars, including James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Gary Cooper, Edward G. Robinson, and many others! These are many times more rare than 8x10 stills, and are very rarely offered for sale or at auction, and many of these may be "one of a kind"! This is a very rare opportunity to acquire one or many of these extreme rarities! Condition: very good to fine. Learn More about condition grades
