An Original Vintage Theatrical Linenbacked French "Affiche" Movie Poster (23x32; measures 23 3/4" x 31 1/2" [60 x 80 cm]) (Learn More)

Le Schpountz (released in the U.S. in 1939 as "Heartbeat"), the 1938 Marcel Pagnol French movie making comedy (about a simpleton who works in a store but dreams of being a movie star, and when a movie is being filmed near where he lives, he goes to the set, and they see how naive he is, and they sign him to a fake contract, and he thinks he is really about to become a major star!) starring Fernandel, Orane Demazis, Leon Belieres, Robert Vattier, and Fernand Charpin. Note that Marcel Pagnol apparently based this story on a true incident that occurred in France at this time. The movie was being shot while he was writing the script, and after it was filmed the first time, Pagnol was unhappy with it, and he completely re-shot it, and since Pierre Brasseur was no longer available, his scenes were re-shot with Roger Forster. But when Pagnol assembled the film, he used some of the shots from the rejected first version, which resulted in both Forster and Brasseur appearing in the final film in the same role! Finally, note that IMDb says that the "international English title" of this movie was "Heartbeat", and we found that it did play in the U.S. in 1939 under that title, and we also found that it played under the original title in Quebec, Canada in 1939 (likely because they speak French there), but we don't know what title it played under in other English-speaking countries. It makes perfect sense that it would not play under the French title in English-speaking countries, because "le schpountz" is a French idiom for a simpleton that would not be known in non-French speaking countries.

What IS linenbacking? Learn More

Overall Condition and Pre-Restoration Defects with Quality of Restoration: very good. The poster had tears and tiny paper loss by the crossfold, with a few small tears in the bottom half of the vertical fold and a lesser amount of wear on the rest of the folds. It had some pinholes and tape stains in the borders. Overall, the poster was in good to very good condition prior to linenbacking. The poster was nicely backed, and displays well!
